Well-preserved city wall, 42 gate and defense towers shape the silhouette of the city. Rothenburg is also well known for its ancient fachwerk buildings. Timber framed houses „Fachwerkhäuser“ are believed to derive from the old german word for braiding. And basically it is a form of braiding: A skeleton is constructed out of wooden bars. The spaces between the bars (Fächer) are then filled with a mixture of clay and wood braid or – later on – with masonry. The oldest timber framed house in Germany dates from 1262. This construction is by no means a purely historical construction. Even modern houses are sometimes built in fachwerk construction or a modern variant of it. Эта конструкция отнюдь не является чисто исторической или даже устаревшей конструкцией. Даже современные дома иногда строятся в фахверковом стиле или в его современном варианте.
